PenCol Compounding Pharmacy Receives Exceptional Safety and Quality Accreditation

Denver-based PenCol Compounding Pharmacy recently earned national industry recognition from the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) for its commitment to safety and outstanding quality. PCAB accreditation validates PenCol's longstanding dedication to the highest standards possible for its compounding practice, staff and customers in Colorado and in its licensed states: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

PenCol is the second pharmacy in Colorado to receive PCAB accreditation and one of only 150 pharmacies in the U.S. that have attained the distinction. PCAB sets strict and comprehensive standards for compounding and recognizes independent pharmacies across the country for exceptional services. It provides patients and prescribers with a means to select pharmacies that meet standardized quality and safety requirements.

"Compounding is an art as well as a science," said Marshall Tobin, R.Ph. and PenCol owner. "Not every drug works for every person and our medicines are carefully compounded to treat each customer with the highest quality possible. PCAB's distinguishing honor validates the dedication to safety and accuracy that has been our guide for more than four decades."

For more than 40 years, PenCol has created compounded prescriptions for members of the general public, hospitals, dentists and veterinarians with quality ingredients. Compounding is the practice of mixing medications to fit unique needs of patients who cannot take mass-produced drugs due to allergies, physical incapability, preference or other prohibitive conditions. PenCol's products include:

  • Quickly absorbing topical ointments to replace pills or injections and minimize side effects.
  • Andropause and menopause hormones for men and women including bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).
  • Flavored or chewy medication for children.
  • Unique dosage forms for better patient compliance or absorption (including flavored lollipops, creams, gels, suppositories, troches and more).
  • Unavailable and/or discontinued medications.

PenCol's highly trained staff regularly tests prescriptions and guarantees a quality experience for each individual patient through consultations and follow-up care. Staff members are required to attend classes and seminars to keep up-to-date with the latest advances in the compounding practice for customer safety as well as their own. They strive daily to uphold the pharmacy triad involving the patient, pharmacist and physician, and identifying the patient as the "team captain."

"I like to compare compounding prescriptions to buying clothes," Tobin said. "There's a difference between buying off the rack and having garments tailor-made. PenCol's staff members are like the customer's prescription tailors, making sure to adhere to the doctor's order."

PenCol also recently received recognition as a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Partner from DYNALABS, an independent testing lab for pharmaceuticals. Based on PenCol's customer engagement and performance, DYNALABS recognized PenCol's higher level of patient safety.
